What Is Reformer Pilates?

The reformer is a spring-loaded apparatus designed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. Using adjustable resistance, the reformer trains every major muscle group with low-impact, controlled movement. It's the most efficient strength, flexibility, and posture workout in fitness — which is why dancers, athletes, and physical therapists have been using it for over a hundred years.

A typical reformer class works your core, glutes, legs, arms, and back through a series of resistance-based exercises. You'll lengthen muscles while strengthening them, improve joint mobility, and build the kind of functional strength that translates to everything else you do — including pole, aerial, dance, hiking, and just getting through your day.

Why Take Reformer Pilates at Tease

There are a lot of reformer pilates studios in Denver. Here's what makes Tease different:

  • Small class sizes — you'll get hands-on attention from your instructor, not lost in a crowded room
  • Certified instructors — every reformer teacher at Tease is comprehensively trained, not weekend-certified
  • Body-positive, judgment-free environment — same culture that has made Tease one of Denver's most welcoming studios for nearly two decades
  • Santa Fe Arts District location — easier parking, less crowded, and walking distance to some of Denver's best galleries, restaurants, and bars
  • Cross-training built in — your reformer pass also gets you into pole, aerial, dance, and fitness classes if you want them. Most reformer studios in Denver only offer reformer.
  • Woman-owned since 2007 — Tease has been a Denver fitness institution for 18+ years

What to Expect in Your First Reformer Class

Your first reformer class will start with a brief orientation — your instructor will show you how the reformer works, walk you through the safety basics, and answer any questions before class begins. You'll spend the next 50–55 minutes moving through a sequence of foot work, core work, arm work, leg work, and stretching.

You don't need any prior pilates experience. Most of our students are beginners when they walk in. The reformer is intuitive once you've tried it, and our instructors will adjust every move to your level.

What to wear:

  • Form-fitting athletic clothing (no loose shirts — they get in the way during inverted moves)
  • Grippy socks (required for hygiene and safety) — we sell them at the studio if you don't have a pair
  • No baggy shorts, no zippers, no jewelry

What to bring: A water bottle and yourself. We provide everything else.

Reformer Pilates Benefits

Regular reformer pilates practice delivers measurable results in 6–8 weeks:

  • Stronger, leaner muscles without bulk
  • Better posture and reduced back pain
  • Improved core strength and stability
  • Greater flexibility and joint mobility
  • Better balance and coordination
  • Reduced stress and improved mental focus
  • Cross-training benefit if you also pole, aerial, run, lift, or do yoga

Reformer pilates is especially effective for people recovering from injury, dealing with chronic pain, navigating pregnancy or postpartum recovery, or coming back to fitness after a break. The low-impact, instructor-guided nature of the practice means you can work hard without risking injury.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be in shape to start reformer pilates? No. Pilates is one of the most beginner-friendly forms of strength training. Your instructor will modify every exercise to your level.

Is reformer pilates a good workout? Yes — a serious one. You'll be sore in places you didn't know you had muscles. It builds deep core strength, full-body endurance, and noticeable muscle tone within weeks.

Can I do reformer pilates if I'm pregnant or postpartum? In most cases, yes — pilates is widely recommended during and after pregnancy. Talk to your doctor first, and tell your instructor so they can modify exercises appropriately.

Is reformer pilates good for back pain? Yes. Reformer pilates is one of the most-recommended exercises by physical therapists for chronic back pain. The controlled, supported nature of the movement strengthens the muscles that stabilize the spine.

How is reformer pilates different from mat pilates? Mat pilates uses only your body weight. Reformer pilates uses spring resistance, which makes the workout more challenging and dynamic. Reformer also offers more exercise variety than mat.

How often should I take reformer classes to see results? 2–3 classes per week is the sweet spot. You'll see noticeable strength and posture changes within 4–6 weeks.

Do I need grippy socks? Yes — for hygiene and safety. We sell them at the studio if you don't have a pair.

Where are reformer classes held? Reformer classes run out of The Pole POD in Denver's Santa Fe Arts District: 800 8th Ave, Suite 104, Denver, CO 80204.

Can I use my $80 intro pass for reformer classes? The $80 Newbie Pass covers pole, aerial, and dance classes at our RiNo studio. To include reformer, choose the All Access Starter at $99, which covers all classes at both locations including reformer.
